Exclusive site visits

Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Katanga Province is one of the world’s most exciting minerals development projects. TFM is currently one of the country’s largest producers of copper and cobalt and continues to engage in drilling activities, exploration analyses and metallurgical testing to evaluate the potential of this highly prospective minerals district. Production volumes from the project are expected to expand significantly over time. A select group will have the opportunity to visit the site of one of the key players in the Congolese mining sector. Delegates will depart at 6am sharp and drive to Fungurume to tour the mining and processing operations, and some of the company’s important community development projects in the area.

WHAT HAPPENENED IN 2017?

During a visit on June 22 to the Kamoa-Kakula copper project operated by Ivanhoe Mines, 27 delegates were able to take the full measure of headway already made on the scheme. Congo-K’s government is counting greatly on the project -the biggest copper discovery in Africa (AMI 378) - to help revive its copper belt that has taken a strong knock from the fall in the copper price.

The visit was led by Managing Director, Louis Watum and General Director, Guy Nzuru. The group was first introduced to the Ivanhoe Mines team before being taken onsite fully geared up. The DRC Mining Week participants were first taken to the Kamoa-Kakula project and invited to visit the underground mine to fully appreciate the scale of the operations. Later in the day, the group had the incredible opportunity to discover the Kakula site and the building of the new mine. Kakula was identified only last year, and its size and exceptionally high grading in copper have prompted Ivanhoe to step up its development as quickly as possible.

“THE WARM WELCOME AND ENTHUSIASM OF IVANHOE IS CONTAGIOUS. THIS REFLECTS THE SCALE AND EXCITEMENT IN THE DISCOVERY OF THIS MINE.”
