Flagship mining gathering picks up right where it left off
The DRC’s flagship, award-winning mining event, DRC Mining Week, has been moved to June 2022 to ensure uncompromised safety for all delegates and attendees as the current COVID-19 pandemic continues to prohibit ease of international travel . The Lubumbashi-based mining expo and conference was scheduled to return as a live, in-person event in the Copperbelt mining hub from 24–25 October this year.
Mining is this mineral-rich country’s main source of income, and it plays a significant role in the global supply of cobalt, copper, diamond, tantalum, tin and gold, among other resources.
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly or quickly,” says Sabrina Tab, DRC Mining Week’s event manager, “and we consulted widely before coming to the conclusion that moving the event to 14–16 June 2022 is the right decision for now. The safety of our partners, delegates and visitors is of paramount importance to us. Therefore, given the scale of our live event in Lubumbashi (5,000+ participants) and the government restrictions on large gatherings due to COVID-19 concerns, it will not be safe to continue with the event at this moment in time”.”
She adds: “The decision to postpone the Live DRC Mining Week is fully supported by our longstanding event partners, including the Fédération des Entreprises du Congo (FEC) (Chamber of Commerce) and key sponsors who have already committed to be part of the 2022 edition.”
“Good things cannot be rushed”
Says event manager Tab: “We know everyone, including our team, misses being back in territory, but good things cannot be rushed, and we are already planning an impactful live event that will exceed our previous standards and will not disappoint our stakeholders. It is important to focus on the scale and quality of delivery while health and safety of all parties remains a priority. We look forward to welcoming back all our local and international mining friends. Watch out Lubu, June 2022 is just around the corner and we will be back with a bang!”
A much-loved and well-attended annual event that has been around for 17 years, DRC Mining Week made a very successful transition during the past 18 months to virtual engagements for mining companies, investors and industry suppliers during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown and hosted many exciting debates with major players in the DRC mining sector.
#DMW’s successful transition to digital
The fast-growing attendee numbers and feedback from participants and partners fully support the remarkable digital growth that the organisers and partners of the event have experienced in the development of the digital forum for the industry to connect via live, online events on the Mine.It Africa–Connect digital platform.
The June 2021 edition of the event featured a live keynote address by the country’s mining minister, H.E. Antoinette N’Samba Kalambayi. The two-day broadcast attracted more than 1,000 registered attendees, representing more than 200 companies from 76 countries, and featuring 20 speakers and 22 sponsors and exhibitors.
